2016 Draft Profile - Patrick McCaw
Strengths: Standing at 6’7” at the two spot with an excellent wingspan, Patrick McCaw has great measurements for his position. The UNLV product is a well-balanced player on both sides of the floor that has a lot to do with his versatility and athletic ability.Offensively, McCaw is a good shooter than can shoot from deep and can create for others around him. He’s also a solid ball handler that sees the floor well, especially in transition.
His greatest asset may be that he can guard multiple positions with his long frame and 6’10” wingspan. McCaw was great at racking up steals and gets his hands in the passing lane quite often.
Participating in the NBA Draft combine (38-inch vertical jump and shot 13-for-25 from NBA 3-point range) has really helped his stock.
Weaknesses: Although McCaw may be able to guard multiple positions with his lanky frame, he’ll need to add some strength to be effective at the next level. McCaw weighs only about 180 pounds so putting some weight on him is the top priority for him entering the NBA.
He also needs to keep working on shooting his jumper more effectively, however he’s further along the line than other athletic forwards like Ben Simmons and DeAndre Bembry.
Overall, however, McCaw is receiving a lot of attention for those coaches and scouts who favor analytics – he’s long, athletic, can guard multiple positions, shoot it well from deep, get others involved and can rack up steals.
