2016 Draft Profile - Tyler Ulis
Strengths: Despite being an undersized point guard at only 5’9”, Tyler Ulis heads into the NBA Draft as one of the quickest prospects in this year’s draft class.Ulis is one of, if not the purest point guard who can just about do everything on the floor. He has great court vision and is a natural leader besides only being 20 years old. Ulis showed in his sophomore campaign that he was not only a willing passer, but a guard that could score from everywhere on the floor – averaging 17.3 points and 7.0 assists per game.
Offensively, Ulis is a good shooter with three-point range and he can get others open shots with his vision and ability to drive and kick out. He’s also an explosive athlete that can move both laterally and up and down the court.
What has impressed many NBA scouts is that Ulis can get it done on both ends of the court being a pesky defender which makes up for the lack of height he gives up. If he were just a few inches taller, Ulis would’ve definitely been considered a top-10 draft pick.
Weaknesses: Although Ulis tries to make up for his small stature in every way possible on the floor, this will be the biggest obstacle that he’ll try to overcome as he takes his talents to the next level.
Besides being outsized at the point guard position, Ulis also has to add strength to his physique if he wants to have a solid career in the NBA.
Yes, he’s still young and it’s a common problem that most deal with heading into the league, but already being smaller than all guards, the last thing he wants to do is allow opponents to have their way inside the basket.
