2017 Draft Profile - Dennis Smith

Strengths: Dennis Smith Jr. is an explosive point guard with outstanding athleticism. With his size, speed and athleticism, he has the ability the get to the rim almost whenever he wants. Not only does he have the ability to get to the rim, but he is also a very good finisher and likes to punish the rim.

He is very unselfish and is a gifted passer. He plays fast, but knows how to control the pace of the game in his favor, which most of the time is up-tempo.

His strength and athleticism also helps him on the defensive end, where he blocks shots better than most guards and can be an elite perimeter defender if he wants to.

Weaknesses: The one clear weakness in Smith’s game is his perimeter shooting ability. The intangibles are there, but his shot just doesn’t seem to fall and he is often hesitant to shoot from the outside.

Not only does his three-point shot need to improve, but his mid-range game can also show some improvement. Defenders sit back on him because they know he wants to get to the basket, but if he can develop a consistent mid-range jump shot or floater of some sort, then defenders will not know what to do when guarding him.

Lastly, he has some injury concerns as he missed his entire senior season in high school with a torn ACL. The way he plays is conducive to injuries, which is similar to Derrick Rose.
