Vernon Carey
Ht/Wt: 6'10" / 265 lbs
Position: C
Team: Duke
Class: Freshman

2020 Draft Profile - Vernon Carey

Jeremy Woo - Sept. 16th: "Carey was highly productive as a freshman, and while he’s not where the NBA is headed, his size, strength and rebounding ability should work in his favor. He’s still pretty young, has room to improve his body and has potential to shoot the ball adequately from outside, which could make him a fairly useful player."

Gary Parrish - CBS Sports - July 6th: "Vernon Carey would've been a top-10 pick if he were born 20 years earlier. But with unathletic centers devalued and sometimes unplayable in today's NBA, there are a lot of things working against the Duke star even though he was the best freshman in college basketball this past season while averaging 17.8 points and 8.8 rebounds for a team that finished fifth at KenPom."

NBA Draft Room - July 6th: "He makes his moves with good suddenness and a surprisingly quick first step. Combining this speed with his raw power makes him hard to stop in the lane, where he shows a nice array of baby hook shots, spin moves and a soft touch."

USA Today - June 25th: "The college basketball freshmen of the year and second-team All-American, Carey has the strength, size and great hands, making him difficult to defend in the low post. He’s also a strong rebounder (especially on the offensive glass) and shot blocker."

NBA Draft Room - May 26th: "A bruising center who can overpower opponents in the lane and also has great quickness and agility. Has a nice skill level for a young big but doesn't have ideal length or vertical explosion."

Jeremy Woo - SI - May 6th: "It’s hard to knock how productive Carey was as a freshman, but there’s lingering fear among scouts that he may end up a casualty of the NBA’s trend toward mobile, skilled bigs. Carey is a good athlete and strong offensive rebounder who has been a menace in the paint at the college level, but he’s not especially skilled as a finisher against bodies, and relies heavily on going to his left hand and drawing contact."

Jeff Goodman - Stadium - May 6th: "Carey isn’t a high-flyer, but he’s more athletic than people realize, and he can score in the paint and also rebound at a high level."
