Position: PG
Team: Louisianna Lafayette
Class: Junior

2014 Draft Profile - Elfrid Johnson

Strengths:
Payton could turn out to be one of the sleepers of this draft class. He has ideal measurables for the point guard position with excellent ball handling skills. He is an absolute terror in transition, using his speed and ball skills to get to the basket.

He is a willing passer with good vision who excels at getting his teammates the ball in great position to finish. He is great getting into the paint, and has already shown himself to be great in isolation and pick-and-roll situations, something that will serve him well at the next level.

Defensively is where he really shines. His height, length, and speed allowed him to matchup with multiple different positions in college. He shows a desire to lock down opponents which can not be taught, and once he adds some weight on his frame, he could be able to guard any wing position with ease.

Also, despite being a junior, Payton is very young for his class, enrolling in college at the age of 17. He is in only two weeks older than Joel Embiid and three weeks older than Marcus Smart, so there is still a lot of room for growth.

Weaknesses:
Despite averaging 19 points in his junior season, Payton has a long ways to go as a scorer at the next level.

His jumper is non-existant at this point and his shooting percentages reflect that. He also struggles finishing at the rim especially through contact. This is due to a combination of things, namely his difficulty finishing with his off-hand, and a frame that needs to add strength.

While a good ball handler, he also turns the ball over far more than you would like to see from a point guard. Almost four turnovers a game won’t cut it at the next level.

Payton’s lack of an outside shot leads some to compare him to Rajon Rondo, but he lacks the ambidexterity and uncanny court vision of the Celtics PG. If he plans on carving out a long career, he must severely improve the jumper and cut down on the turnovers, or he won’t be around for too long.
