2014 Draft Profile - Jerami Grant
Strengths:Grant is one of the best pure athletes in this draft class. His combination of size, length, speed, and leaping ability make him an absolute terror on the offensive glass, as well as on defense where he can guard multiple positions.
His offensive game is still raw at the time, but he has shown the ability to step out and hit a midrange jumper. Most importantly, he understands his weaknesses and plays within himself at all times.
He made significant improvements on some of his weak areas in between his freshman and sophomore seasons, showing an ability to drive to his right and left equally well.
He knows where he has an advantages on defenders and plays towards that, using his quickness to get around bigger guys, while using his size and athleticism to elevate over smaller players.
He is the son of former NBA player Harvey Grant, and nephew of Horace so he has been around the NBA atmosphere since he was young
Weaknesses:
Grant does not have a defined position at the next level. Defensively, he’s better suited to guard wing players, but offensively, he lacks the consistent ball handling and shooting to be stationed outside on a regular basis.
While he showed improvement from his freshman to sophomore campaigns, Grant still has a ways to go to be able to contribute on the offensive side of the ball. He has no go-to moves and his outside shot, while improved, is still inconsistent.
Grant struggles from the free throw line, shooting under 70 percent in both seasons at Syracuse, though he did improve considerably from his freshman season.
He will need to add some weight to his frame as he is still thin and will struggle with the strength of NBA-level players.
All told, Grant is an intriguing prospect with a chance to become something in the Thaddeus Young mold. He has proven that he can improve on his weaknesses and if that growth continues, he can end up being one of the steals of the draft.
