2014 Draft Profile - Kristaps Porzingis

Strengths:
With his combination of youth, height, and athletic ability, Porzingis is sure to intrigue a number of scouts and GMs in the draft.

At only 18 years old, Porzingis still has a lot to learn about the game of basketball, but he has already been playing professionally in Spain for 4 years. While he doesn’t play much he has shown flashes of being a very good player down the road.

He possesses excellent mobility and speed for a seven footer. This isn’t Roy Hibbert running down the floor, Porzingis looks smooth and fluid moving up and down the floor and can keep up with players smaller than him.

He has a solid face-up game with range out to the NBA three-point line and has also shown some decent ball handling skills. He can take players off the dribble with either hand and has an array of finishes, hitting fadeaway and turnaround jumpers with ease.

Defensively, his athletic ability allows him to come up with a number of blocks. He is very Serge Ibaka-like in that way. He also has solid lateral quickness that allows him to keep up with smaller players on the perimeter and contain guards on pick-and-rolls.

Weaknesses:
His age is a great thing when considering his potential, but his lack of experience shows when going up against more seasoned, physically imposing veterans.

He does not have the lower body strength to contend with strong players on the post and is easily moved out of the way on the block. This tends to lead to him fouling a lot.

Offensively he lacks any semblance of a post game. He doesn’t have the strength to move people down low and his only offensive production comes from facing up and going off the dribble. His lack of strength also shows itself around the rim as he struggles to finish through contact and tries to avoid it more often than not, leading to a lack of free throw attempts.

Porzingis is a project, but the potential is there in bundles. Someone like Channing Frye would be an ideal comparison if he can add a little more weight and mature his game.
